Queen Elizabeth Hospital purchases two CARESTREAM DRX-Evolution Systems for busy acute-care emergency department

ADELAIDE, May. 26 — The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia has purchased two CARESTREAM DRX-Evolution Systems in it’s two room Emergency Department, allowing for a General Radiography room next to a dedicated Trauma room. The 350 bed hospital was the first in Australia to order the innovative DRX-Evolution System from Carestream Health, Inc. The fully automated DR suite delivers rapid patient throughput with wireless DRX-1 detectors providing the ultimate in positioning flexibility for critically ill or injured patients.

“After evaluating several DR systems, we selected the DRX-Evolution platform because of its high degree of flexibility,” said John Hristopoulos, Senior Radiographer - Emergency Department, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. “Moving to DR, with the ability to interchange DRX-1 detectors from room to room, will dramatically improve our workflow and at the same time allow dose reduction to the patient without compromising image quality.”

The DRX-Evolution is a new modular digital radiography system that can simplify and speed the capture of even the most challenging views. John adds, “the auto tracking and auto positioning features allow for a reduction in manual handling techniques and therefore a reduced risk of injury, which is important from an OH&S standpoint.” The thin, lightweight DRX-1 detector delivers enhanced patient comfort that is especially important for trauma cases. The wireless detector can be removed from the bucky tray for tabletop views and the system’s wall stand can be positioned by the table for cross-table views. Images are communicated over a secure wireless network and appear on the console in seconds.

The system’s modular design can be easily expanded to address changes in radiology workflow and number of exams. It offers a wall stand with six-axis motion and a four-way float elevating table. Healthcare providers can elect to use one, two or three detectors to perform a wide variety of general radiology and trauma exams.

The Hospital also ordered a PACS web server to distribute images to the emergency department.  “This will become a back up facility for storing Emergency Department examinations allowing physicians quicker access to images” said Hristopoulos.
