Carestream Health Showcases Advances in Radiology Solutions at ECR 2009

VIENNA, March 6 ― At the European Congress of Radiology Carestream Health is showcasing a range of innovative radiology solutions designed to provide added convenience, time saving and cost efficiency for clinicians and IT staff. Solutions on show include:

New Features for RIS/PACS

A new generation RIS/PACS platform is showcased as a work in progress, which offers advanced tools and features to streamline the delivery of imaging services and boost productivity.  As part of its PACS platform the Company demonstrated an innovative “power viewer” that promises to speed exam interpretation and reporting for routine exams and 3D imaging studies where complex data sets need to be compared. This new capability provides automatic registration and volumetric matching of 3D studies created at different times and by different modalities directly within the viewer used by radiologists.

First-Ever SuperPACS™ Architecture

This new architecture will equip healthcare providers to streamline workflow—using existing PACS resources—since it will enable the sharing of patient images and information, while also delivering a global worklist that balances exam reading among on-site and off-site radiologists. The Super PACS Architecture, currently a work in progress, will be available for order in the second quarter of 2009.

First Wireless, Cassette-sized Digital Radiography (DR) Detector

Carestream Health is demonstrating the industry’s first wireless, cassette-sized digital radiography (DR) detector, the CARESTREAM DRX-1 System. The system can be employed in all applications where a 35 x 43 cm (14 x 17 inch) X-ray cassette would be used and easily incorporated into all types of radiology environments without modification.  Also showcased is a new generation of image processing software for its CR and DR platforms, and a new long-length imaging system for its DR 7500 System.

Tabletop Laser Imager For Mammography, General Radiography Applications

A new tabletop, low- to mid-volume laser imager is announced that will provide healthcare professionals with 508 pixels-per-inch (ppi) output to address the need for affordable laser-quality film output from full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and CR-based mammography systems. The CARESTREAM DRYVIEW 5850 Laser Imager, currently a work in progress, is scheduled to be available worldwide in the first half of 2009.

European Success

CARESTREAM solutions are currently delivering advanced functionality to many European healthcare providers including:

EU-Funded R-Bay Project

Carestream Health is a major technical infrastructure provider to the EU-funded R-Bay validation project, which has now passed its mid-term review. The company is experiencing significant interest from a worldwide audience in this project, which aims to address the uneven spread of radiologists across member states. The initial test platform is facilitating remote reporting of images from hospitals in Denmark, Finland and Czech Republic by clinical providers in Estonia, Lithuania and the Netherlands.

Nij Smellinghe Hospital, Drachten, The Netherlands

Nij Smellinghe Hospital has selected Hosted Information Management (HIM) services from Carestream Health to remotely archive existing and future patient data. The HIM service will securely store an estimated 9 Terabytes of both DICOM and non-DICOM images in a central data centre, from which authorized users can archive, share and distribute patient data.

Grupo Hospitalario Quiron, Spain

Installation of a RIS/PACS system at one of Spain’s largest private medical groups, Grupo Hospitalario Quiron, has been completed. The group currently operates six hospitals across Spain in Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian, Valencia and two in Zaragoza with plans to expand to Bilbao and Seville.

European DR Orders

Significant recent orders in Scotland for KODAK DIRECTVIEW DR 7500 Systems― 7 units at Greater Glasgow and Clyde Health Board and 4 units at Fife Health Board. Installation is scheduled for Q2/3 2009.

Events

Outside of the show floor, Carestream Health will participate in two events, which offer the opportunity for delegates to learn more about the company’s innovative mammography solutions.

Series of Digital Mammography Self Assessment Workshops

Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th March 2009. Room 01, First Level, Austria Centre.

Sessions will be led by Roland Holland MD, PhD and Henny Rijken, from the National Expert and Training Centre for Breast Cancer Screening at Radboud University Medical Centre, Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Each workshop aims to provide participants with:

  • Familiarity in reading and manipulating screening digital mammography cases
  • Assessment of reading skills to detect cancers in their early stage and maintain a good balance between recall and detection rates
  • A choice of up to ten different modules, each one containing 30 selected mammography cases with a mix of biopsy proven positives and negatives
  • Presentation: Digital Workflow for Mammography Screening Purposes in Denmark

Speaker: Ulf Andersson, Marketing Director Europe North, Carestream Health

Friday March 6, Room F2, 14:00-15:30

Overview: Ringsted Sygehus in the Sjaelland Region of Denmark initiated development work with Carestream Health for a digital workflow module for mammography screening. A number of unique mammography RIS applications have been developed as a result of this collaboration, including double blind reading functionality, customized order entry and a dedicated “patient portal”.
